 Septic System Maintenance Tips

Regular Cleaning

If you have a standard household septic system, you should have it cleaned every 2-3 years by a septic service professional such as Samy Young’s team. Talk to us today about cleaning and maintaining your system.

Pumping on Schedule

Have your septic system pumped every 3-5 years based on overall household size, septic tank size and average volume of wastewater generated. If your scum layer is in 6 inches of the bottom or if the top of the sludge is within 12 inches of the outline OR more than 25% of the overall liquid depth in the tank is compromised of sludge and scum your septic tank should be pumped and ideally get a thorough cleaning as well.

Proper Waste Disposal

What you flush or put down your garbage disposal can impact your interior plumbing, causing potential blockages or pipe bursts, it can also cause problems with your septic system. A good general rule is to only flush liquid, human waste and toilet paper. Even things marked as ‘safe’ to flush or put down your garbage disposal such as flushable wipes, feminine hygiene products, dental floss, coffee grounds or any liquid solvents should be disposed of in the trash and not into your septic system.

Protect Your Drain Field

Your drain field is an important component to your septic system, removing contaminants from the liquid that emerges from your septic tank and these basic principles help keep it operating optimally and safely.

Don’t park on your drain field.

Be aware of guidelines for planting trees near your drain field. A septic system professional can help plot out the best distance depending on your individual set up and landscape.

Don’t overload your drain field. Direct roof drains, sump pumps and other rainwater drainage systems separate and directed away from your septic system drain field. Excess water in the ground can slow down or possibly block the wastewater treatment process.

Visual Inspection

With camera line inspections,  you get visual proof that your septic system is in optimal condition, free from any lingering clogs. This reassurance allows you to experience the peace of mind of a flawlessly maintained sewer system.
